Patxaran: The Basque Digestif

Patxaran* Late summer is time for sloe berries. In the markets of the Basque Country farm stands display baskets of what appear to be blueberries. They are not, as you will soon discover should you rashly pop one into your mouth. But soak them in anis for a few months and you've got Patxaran, the Basque after dinner drink. A deep red anise flavored digestif , it is de rigueur at Basque tables on both sides of the Pyrenees.
