You may have noticed or you will soon discover that in San Sebastian, in several cities and towns in the Basque Country many restaurants, bars and cafes close on Mondays.
If you ever find yourself hungry and wandering the streets of San Sebastian or a neighboring town be sure to check our list, this is where we will be posting our finds.
This is seriously a great find.
Zazpi or seven in Basque and also the adress for this bar, is a casual joint run by young chef Paul Arrillaga, he and his team prepare good honest food.
They change their menu with the season and it is always a pleasent suprise. Nice wines and carefully crafted pintxos. It is a nice change to visit a pintxo and nibbles bar outside the Old Quarter and the best thing about it, is that it's open on Mondays!
Their classic baked potatos with a creamy dip is a popular crowd pleaser and always a winning dish to share with friends, but be sure to go down the list of specialties listed on the board and ask for the new dishes.

Essencia Wine bar
Wine bar and store.
Recommended to anyone who enjoys nice wines, nice food pairings and a classic cheese platter. Good honest food and wine. Wine consultant and owner Dani Corman pairs an extensive collection of wines, they are specialists in sherry and Champagne and have a great menu which complements the wine list; from fresh anchovies, heritage Basque pork and seasonal gourmet delicacies and classic treats like spanish potato tortilla. They also host wine-tasting courses for beginners and experts, they have a sweet spot for carefully selected wines from small producers.
This is definitely a great place to spend your Monday!

A good place to know is Gandarias, a classic pintxo bar and restaurant.
Open on Mondays from 11AM to 12AM. Our favourite pintxos from the display on the bar are the baked crab cake and, the tower of stewed mushrooms with a lemony-garlicy sauce with iberian ham balanced on a slice of bread.
From their hot pintxos selection one of their stars is definitely the ¨pintxo de solomillo.¨ Basically seared beef sirloin with a green pepper on a slice of bread sprinkled with Maldon salt.
Another great thing about Gandarias is that they have a great selection of wines, different bottles displayed on the bar connected to a machine which keeps the oxygen out. This allows you to try different high quality wines without having to purchase an entire bottle.
If you want a sit down meal its best to make a reservation. Let us know what you think!
